NOCA MODERN Architect Detail

Body of Work:
Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar

Aside from its plan, the Tonga Room that exists today is almost entirely a product of the 1967 remodel by Howard Hirsch Interior Design. Howard Hirsch Interior Design was founded in 1964 by Howard Hirsch, a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Sorbonne, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Howard Hirsch Interior Design, which still exists in the form of Hirsch/Bedner & Associates, is one of the largest interior design firms in the world, with 165 professional employees in Santa Monica and in branch offices in Atlanta and Hong Kong. The firm specializes in hotel interiors. Completed projects in addition to the Tonga Room renovation in 1967 include the Chicago Hilton, the Tokyo Ana Hotel, the Pan-Pacific in Vancouver, the Sheraton Tower in Singapore, and the Hyatt-on-Collins in Melbourne. Likewise, Oceanic Arts, founded in 1956 by Bob van Oosting and Leroy Schmaltz, remains the premier supplier of Polynesian-themed products in the world and the firm has been responsible for outfitting Tiki bars throughout the world for half a century, including the Tonga Room.
