Located in the Marina District, Schiff House was designed by renowned Modern architect, Richard Nuetra. The house is on three levels and the sleeping quarters are at the upper level facing a terrace overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Despite the relatively small footprint, the interiors are spacious with generous openings toward the surrounding areas. In 1995, the original owner from Berlin, Mrs. Schiff, sold the house to the current proprietor. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art bought the original furniture commissioned by Neutra.
A three story 25 foot wide apartment building on an urban infill lot. The garage doors and entrance level are set back from the main elevation, which is composed of a grid of steel and glass windows and a planter box forming an overhang at the second floor level. At the third floor is a penthouse level which is set back from both the street and the rear elevation. The rear elevation is composed of ribbon windows, alternating with stucco bands. The rooftop terrace has side glass and cement walls to give it the feeling of an outdoor room.
Purchased by architect Chad Overway in 1995, much of the house has been lovingly restored to its original details.
