Designed in 1957, St. Mary’s Park is large-scale rooftop park sited atop a parking garage in Downtown San Francisco. This was one of the first large scale rooftop projects undertaken by Robert Royston, and entailed the redesign and rebuilding of a historic park above the newly constructed above-ground parking structure. The existing historic park was redesigned by Royston, and he created a flowing amorphous pattern of pathways and open space, punctuated by plantings and playgrounds. An existing row of poplar trees was retained as backdrop for the park. Since construction, the park has been altered to include additional playgrounds and bathrooms. The space is popular with lunchtime crowds, food trucks, and children.
