A WORD FROM OUR 2020-21 SYMPOSIUM GRANT RECIPIENT

“The 2021 Docomomo US National Symposium focused on the most important city in the United States when it comes to modern design – Chicago. I have never physically visited Chicago, but I was very grateful for my opportunity to attend this event. It illuminated not only the central role that the city of Chicago has played in Midcentury Modernism but also how it represents a node that connects the Midcentury Modern design of many other large cities in America, such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.  The event was virtual but didn’t fail to be engaging and compelling. The panels taught me a lot about the history and significance of Chicago landmarks, as well as the place those buildings hold in the future of architecture and preservation,” said Kadia Bah, student of Architecture at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

ABOUT THE 2022 NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

The Docomomo US National Symposium is the primary event in the United States for professionals to discuss and share efforts to study and preserve Modern architecture and meet leading practitioners and industry professionals. Held annually, this multi-day conference seeks to engage local participants in cities across the United States, offering participants the ability to explore a wide variety of significant modern architecture and sites.

The U.S. Modern Movement in architecture is broadly defined as the period from 1930-1970s. Buildings or sites of the period often looked to the future without overt references to historical precedent; expressed functional, technical, or spatial properties; and were conscious of being modern, expressing the principles of modern design. The architecture produced during this period took on many forms and represented a range of complex ideologies.

Yo! Modernism! In the Philadelphia region, “yo” is a colloquialism used to get someone’s attention quickly. It’s a phrase without pretense, and when combined with Modernism, it puts into focus the importance of place and community in our modern heritage, as well as the urgency of preservation efforts. The 2022 Docomomo US National Symposium will explore why Modernism still has the power to turn heads, to inform, and to adapt, and how its many manifestations reflect on local, regional, and broader goals.

From pared-down Classicism to space-age whimsy, from the streamlined to the sculptural, from the monumental to the everyday, the multi-layered, multi-generational Modernism found in Philadelphia reflects ideas found around the world, and we look forward to exploring these ideas further.
