A WORD FROM OUR 2022 SYMPOSIUM GRANT RECIPIENT

“In June, I had the pleasure of attending ‘Yo! Modernism,’ the 2022 National Symposium in Philadelphia. Thanks to the grant, I attended many amazing tours, met a variety of fellow modernism enthusiasts, stayed at the infamous PSFS building, and absorbed much of Philly’s rich history. The Symposium introduced me to several instances where past and present value systems come to a head. It also illuminated the opportunity for historic preservation to serve as the connective tissue between them,” said Shelby Kendrick, a doctoral student of architecture in the History, Theory, and Society program at UC Berkeley.

ABOUT THE 2023 NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

The Docomomo US National Symposium is the primary event in the United States for professionals to discuss and share efforts to study and preserve Modern architecture and meet leading practitioners and industry professionals. Held annually, this multi-day conference seeks to engage local participants in cities across the United States, offering participants the ability to explore a wide variety of significant modern architecture and sites.

The U.S. Modern Movement in architecture is broadly defined as the period from 1930-1970s. Buildings or sites of the period often looked to the future without overt references to historical precedent; expressed functional, technical, or spatial properties; and were conscious of being modern, expressing the principles of modern design. The architecture produced during this period took on many forms and represented a range of complex ideologies.

Join us in New Haven, Connecticut from June 21-24, 2023 and experience one of the country’s most densely woven collections of mid-century art, design, and architecture. As we take in this cultural epicenter, we will consider the triumphs and complexities surrounding the design and building of the Modern city and the impacts on our collective communities.
