Paffard Keatinge-Clay (1926-2023) was a significant architect of the 1960s and 70s whose body of work, while limited in number of built works, left an indelible mark on the San Francisco Bay Area. With a keen eye for material and geometry, Keatinge-Clay created some of San Francisco's most remarkable Modernist buildings. This tour visits his last Bay Area project, the San Francisco State University (SFSU) Student Center designed in 1968, and completed in 1975 after a long and complicated timeline involving extensive consultation with student groups. This tour will explore Keatinge-Clay’s architectural career and legacy, as well as materials, details, and spaces that make this building more of a walkable sculpture. Despite some additions and alterations, the building remains one of the best examples of Brutalist architecture in San Francisco, a key example of Keatinge-Clay’s expressive design, and a building that truly deserves to be experienced in person.
